Dog birthday ideas aren’t just about cake and candles (especially not candles). They’re about celebrating the little heartbeat at your feet who’s brought more joy, chaos and unconditional love than you ever thought possible.
Our dogs get far too few birthdays for our liking. If we could give them half of what’s left in our lives and live happily ever after together, we absolutely would. But until someone cracks that magic, we’ll just have to make every birthday count.
So yes, we’re throwing a party. The kind of party you’d throw for your child because let’s be honest, they are your child. They deserve the best of the best. Pupcakes, presents, partywear and playtime.
Do they know it’s their birthday? Not quite. But do they know everyone’s fussing over them, that today is something special, something joyful? Absolutely. And they love every minute.
It doesn’t have to be the actual day if it’s a work day, just plan the closest weekend to dedicate to your pup.
Dog Birthday Gifts: Let Them Unwrap a Present
There is nothing more heart-melting than watching your dog nose into a gift just for them. Whether it’s a plush toy, a new rope to tug or something squeaky and fun, the act of unwrapping adds to the excitement.
Use acid-free tissue paper or a simple gift bag and make sure it’s easy for them to open. You want joyful tail wags, not frustrated huffs.
Let them tear it open while you cheer them on. Just keep an eye on them during the process. The real joy is in discovering the toy inside, not snacking on the wrapping.
If they get too interested in the paper, gently redirect their attention to what really matters: the gift.
Dexter, our blue roan Cocker, once spent more time playing with the paper than the toy inside. But hey, it’s his party.
When it comes to dog birthday gifts, choose something that reflects their personality. Are they all about cuddles or chaos? Do they go mad for a squeaky toy or prefer a game of tug with something new?
Take Them Somewhere They Love
Birthdays are all about doing what you love most, and the same goes for your pup.
Make today’s walkies extra special by taking them to a place they adore. It could be a local woodland trail, a breezy beach or even just the park where they know every blade of grass.
We always take our gang to one of their favourite local lakes for a birthday swim, weather permitting. Daisy demands sticks be thrown for her to fetch. Dexter never fetches his own, he just tries to swipe Daisy’s and act like it was his all along.
Lucy keeps a watchful eye on ducks and birds, occasionally launching into the water to swim after them. She gives up as soon as they fly off. No wildlife have ever been harmed in our adventures, though plenty have been mildly bemused.
Whatever your dog loves doing most, build it into their special day. Give them space to sniff, run, splash and roll to their heart’s content.
Pupcakes and a Dog Birthday Cake
No birthday is complete without a cake moment!
For dogs, pupcakes are a fun and safe way to serve up something yummy. You can bake them yourself using fruit, pumpkin purée and dog-safe flours or pick up beautifully decorated ones from a local pet bakery (always check the ingredients though).
At The Luna Collection, Ayca bakes a homemade cake for every doggy birthday, Daisy, Lucy and Dexter wouldn’t have it any other way.
And when it’s a human birthday in the house, she makes the same pup-friendly cake so the dogs can celebrate too. Because no one should be left out of a party.
And the candle? Pop one on top for the photo, of course. Just don’t light it. Once you’ve snapped the shot, take it off and let them dive in.
No sparklers please. Their tail wag is sparkly enough.
Dog Birthday Cake Recipe by Luna
Here’s our go-to birthday bake, woofed down by the whole pack.
Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 2 heaped tablespoons pumpkin purée
- 1 teaspoon manuka honey
- Pinch of chia seeds
- 1 mashed banana or a handful of blueberries
- 2 parts coconut flour
- 1 part almond flour (make your own by blending raw, unsalted almonds until fine)
- Optional: sprinkle of freeze-dried cranberries
Instructions
- Whisk the eggs, then stir in the pumpkin purée, manuka honey, chia seeds and fruit.
- Gradually add coconut and almond flours until it resembles a cake batter. Coconut flour soaks up moisture quickly so give it a moment before adding more.
- Spoon into cupcake cases or press into a 6-inch cake tin. We usually bake two separate layers and as many pupcakes as the rest of the batter allows.
- Bake at 160°C in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until firm. Let cool completely before icing.
Icing
- Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsweetened, fat-free quark with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a teaspoon of manuka honey. You can strain the quark for a thicker consistency or skip the icing entirely.
- Top with blueberries or your dog’s favourite treats chopped into tiny toppings. Store in the fridge and serve with a smile.
Shop-bought doggy birthday cakes are also fine as a joyful treat and a small slice once a year but always check the ingredients. Even common ones like peanut butter or flour can cause issues in sensitive pups.
Human cake is strictly off the menu. Sugar, chocolate and sweeteners are toxic to our pups.

Doggy Ice Cream for Summer Pups
If your dog’s birthday lands during the warmer months, a frozen treat is just the thing.
Dog-safe ice cream is widely available now, made without dairy or added sugars.
You can also make your own with mashed banana, berries and salt-free bone broth frozen into ice lolly moulds.
Lucy, our sweet rescue, has a soft spot for anything edible, this applies to frozen treats too. She licks it slowly, then dives in with her paws. It’s messy but it’s magic. We were on holiday a couple of times on her birthday so a doggy ice cream made the perfect birthday ‘cake’ for our darling girl as Ayca couldn’t bake anything.
Serve their scoop in a little bowl or on their birthday pupcake as icing for that full dessert effect.
Just be ready with a napkin. Or three.
Dress the Part
No birthday celebration is complete without a show-stopping outfit. At The Luna Collection, we’re rather partial to dressing up and birthdays are the perfect excuse.
A smart bow tie, a playful sailor bow or a dog bandana with birthday flair can take your pup from cute to camera-ready in seconds.
Daisy, our regal cavalier, insists on a fresh outfit for every event. She struts in wearing a pastel bandana and expects compliments on arrival. Naturally, she gets them.
Pick something comfortable that won’t irritate your dog. Lightweight fabrics and easy fastenings keep things stress-free and stylish.
Our dog accessories make the perfect additions to your dog’s birthday outfit.
Dog Birthday Decorations That Delight
A few thoughtful touches can create the perfect birthday setting.
A children’s sandpit filled with colourful balls makes an excellent DIY ball pit that will keep your dog entertained for ages.
Balloons can be fun if your dog isn’t frightened by them. If they are, skip the pop and go for paper bunting or soft fabric streamers instead. We’re aiming for joy, not jump scares.
Decorate with paw print motifs, playful signage and a doggy birthday banner or two. If you’re feeling crafty, get the kids involved. Homemade decorations add a personal touch and your dog will definitely feel the love.
Snap the Memories
We always try to decorate for birthdays. It’s just so fun and it makes a brilliant backdrop for the photos too.
Believe me, when your dog hits double digits, you’ll be looking back through those birthday albums with watery eyes and a full heart.
A birthday only lasts a day but the memories last forever. Take plenty of photos and short videos throughout the celebration. Try a mix of posed shots and candid moments.
Whether it’s your dog in a birthday bandana, licking their cake or rolling around in the grass, you’ll thank yourself for capturing those moments.
Bonus points if the humans get involved too.
Invite the Pack
Dogs are social creatures and a birthday is the perfect excuse to gather their best pals.
Plan a group walk in your favourite park or book a secure dog field for a few hours of off-lead fun.
Watching your dog run wild with their besties, tails wagging and tongues lolling, is the definition of joy. It’s a chance to let them play, sniff and chase without a care in the world.
Keep treats and water on hand, make sure you double check other pups’ dietary requirements and have a few games in mind like hide and seek or fetch relays.
It doesn’t need to be over-organised. Just let the fun unfold naturally.
Don’t Forget the Party Favours
Your guests deserve a little thank you too. Dog party bags are such a sweet way to send their pals home with a smile.
Fill them with a few tasty treats, a fun toy or even a little bow tie to match the birthday pup. Wrap it up in a paper bag with a name tag. It’s a simple gesture that feels thoughtful and fun.
If you’re making your own, include one of your dog’s favourite snacks or a homemade biscuit. Sharing is caring, after all.
Play Together
At the heart of it, your dog just wants you. Their favourite person. So carve out some quiet time during the day to play, cuddle or just sit in the sun together.
Throw their favourite ball, wrestle with a rope toy or play a little game of chase around the garden. It doesn’t need to be fancy. It just needs to be full of love.
Lucy especially loves a birthday cuddle. She’ll burrow into your lap, tail wagging gently, and let the world melt away. Honestly, it’s the best part of the day.
FAQ
Do dogs recognise their birthdays?

How to wish birthday to a dog?
Say it with love and maybe a slice of pupcake. Your dog doesn’t need fancy words. A cheerful voice, a belly rub and a few of their favourite things say it better than any card ever could.
